1. Create a child profile with the real birthdate

   Amazon assigns each child to an age group based on the birthdate you enter, and the defaults follow from that. You can have up to 4 child profiles. An Amazon Kids+ subscription is not required to use the free parental tools, and you don't need Prime. The same Parent Dashboard covers Fire tablets, Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV. The web browser setting is for Fire tablets. Kindle Kids (ages 7 to 13) and Echo Kids use this dashboard too. The exact steps for leaving a child profile on current Fire OS weren't on a page we could open. Check with Amazon, and set a PIN only you know.

   1. Install Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard, or open parents.amazon.com, and sign in with your Amazon account.
   2. Create a child profile for each child, up to 4.
   3. On the Fire tablet, sign in with your account and pick the child's profile.
   4. Set a device PIN or password only you know. Check Amazon's help for how exiting a child profile works on your tablet.

2. Check the age filter

   Age filters decide which Amazon Kids+ titles your child sees. You can tighten or loosen them, block titles, or add books and videos you already own. They don't apply to outside apps such as Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube. The 2021 Fire Kids Pro launch release says Kids+ on Pro includes PG and PG-13 videos hand-selected by the Amazon Kids team. Check the filter if that's more than you want.

   1. Parent Dashboard > your child > Settings > Adjust Age Filter.
   2. Block titles you don't want. Add purchases you already own under Amazon Content.
   3. Set each outside app's own parental controls. Amazon's age filter doesn't cover them.

3. Set screen time, bedtime, and Learn First

   Amazon describes Learn First this way: parents can block access to things like games and cartoons until after educational goals are met. You can leave unlimited time for reading. Time limits work on compatible Fire tablets, Echo, and Fire TV devices. The Parent Dashboard app version 1.22, from late September 2026, adds one-tap bonus time and pause. Parents in App Store reviews report delays syncing time. That's anecdotal. Test bonus time before you rely on it.

   1. Parent Dashboard > your child > Daily Screen Time.
   2. Set a schedule and a bedtime. Choose a total limit or limits by type (apps, video, reading).
   3. Turn on Learn First if you want entertainment blocked until reading or educational goals are met.
   4. Use Pause and Bonus time from the app when you need them. Set the schedule ahead of time.

4. Choose the web browser mode

   Off means no web browsing. Hand-Selected Websites and Videos are pre-screened by the Amazon Kids team. Filtered Websites and Videos is more open but filtered, for older kids, and you can block specific sites. Amazon says the browser is designed with built-in controls to help filter out inappropriate sites, not that it catches everything. Whether this setting covers browsers inside approved outside apps isn't documented.

   1. Parent Dashboard > Settings > Fire Tablet Web Browser. Pick Off, Hand-Selected, or Filtered.
   2. For younger kids, Hand-Selected is the tighter mode. For older kids, Filtered still needs you to check history.
   3. Check browsing history on the Parent Dashboard home page.

5. Leave store access off, or approve every request

   Apps and games in the Amazon Kids+ catalog do not include in-app purchasing. Outside apps may. Amazon says you will receive a notification by email and must approve a request before the child can download it. The Parent Dashboard app lets parents approve free content requests in the app. In the US, paid requests open in a browser. That in-app approval isn't new. Version 1.9.1 in August 2025 added it. The current listing is version 1.22. Kids Pro has a digital store where kids request apps and eBooks, with parents having final approval. Expanded apps such as Netflix, Zoom, and Minecraft need their own controls.

   1. Parent Dashboard > Content > Store Access. Leave it off, or turn it on so your child can request apps.
   2. Only turn on the expanded selection if you're ready to set up each app.
   3. Approve slowly. Free requests can be approved in the app. In the US, paid requests open in a browser.

6. Decide on calling and review Alexa voice history

   Calling and messaging work only if you turn them on, and only with approved contacts. Echo Kids devices give kid-friendly responses, filter explicit lyrics, and use the same Parent Dashboard. Kids+ adds kids' Alexa content such as Explore with Alexa. In 2023 the FTC and the Justice Department charged Amazon with keeping kids' Alexa voice recordings forever and undermining parents' deletion requests. The settlement required a $25 million civil penalty, deletion of inactive child accounts, and a ban on using voice, children's voice, and geolocation data that parents or users asked to delete to create or improve any data product, including training algorithms. A federal court approved the order on July 19, 2023. Amazon's news site says Alexa+ is now available to everyone in the US. No official page was found on how Alexa+ works in child profiles. The current Alexa app menu for deleting voice history wasn't verified. Check the Alexa app's privacy settings.

   1. Parent Dashboard > Settings > Communications > Calling & Messaging. Leave it off, or limit it to approved contacts.
   2. Review and delete voice history in the Alexa app. Check Amazon's current menu, because the exact taps weren't confirmed.

7. Know the Kids+ price and cancel before a free period renews

   Parent Dashboard is free. Amazon Kids+ in the US, on Amazon's plans page as verified Sep 30, 2026: $7.99/month with Prime, $8.99/month without Prime, or $69.99/year with Prime and $79.99/year without Prime, with a 1-month free trial. Amazon's What is Amazon Kids+ article, originally published August 2023 and last updated July 1, 2025, gives the same monthly prices. A Fire Kids tablet includes either a 6-month or 12-month Amazon Kids+ subscription. Amazon says that included subscription renews automatically at the regular price unless you cancel. Current Fire tablet prices weren't confirmed. The 2023 announcement listed Fire HD 10 Kids and Kids Pro starting at $189.99. That is a 2023 figure, not today's price. Amazon's 2021 launch release says the tablets came with a two-year worry-free guarantee. Current guarantee terms weren't confirmed. Check with Amazon.

   1. Set a reminder a week before the included Kids+ period ends.
   2. Turn off auto-renew in your Amazon account if you don't want it to continue at $7.99 or $8.99 a month, or the annual price.
   3. For a current tablet price or the worry-free guarantee, check Amazon's product page. Don't use the 2023 $189.99 figure as today's price.

8. Plan for when Kids+ stops fitting, and check Amazon's steps

   Amazon labels Kids for ages 3–7, Kids Pro for 6–12, and Kids+ for ages 3–12. Kids+ content is geared toward preschool to preteen kids. The tablet is a full-featured Fire tablet underneath. Once your child uses a regular profile, Amazon Kids controls no longer apply. Amazon's official steps for removing a child profile or turning a Kids tablet into a regular one are on help pages that weren't opened, and whether anything changes automatically at a birthday isn't documented. Check with Amazon before you follow a how-to from somewhere else. Bark supports Fire tablets through the Bark Kids app. It needs Accessibility turned on, and Amazon Kids settings can block installing it.

   1. Around ages 6–7, Amazon's Kids Pro label is the 6–12 lineup, with store requests and a more open filtered browser. That is a label, not an automatic switch.
   2. Around 12–13, Kids+ stops fitting. You can keep the free Parent Dashboard or move to a regular profile. Check Amazon's help for the current steps.
   3. After a regular profile, use your router or another tool. If you add Bark, turn on Accessibility and check that Amazon Kids isn't blocking the install.
