Meta AI

Meta AI sits inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp. The newsroom says teen access to AI characters is paused while Meta rebuilds them. The assistant itself stays available, with protections Meta describes as inspired by a 13+ movie rating. Exact help-center taps did not load, so this list does not invent a menu path.

AI characters for teens are paused. Parent switches to turn off character chats, or to block one character, were described as planned and not yet live.

Follows supervision in the Meta app you already use. We could not load the help-center steps, so do not expect a verified click-path here.

  1. Do not look for a character-blocking switch yet

    Meta says teens' access to AI characters is paused globally while those characters are rebuilt. The assistant remains, with a 13+ style content bar. Switches to turn off one-on-one character chats, or to block a character, were not live when this was checked.

    1. You do not need to find a block-characters switch. Meta said teen access is already paused.
    2. Ignore instructions that tell you to toggle a control the newsroom still described as planned.

  2. Decide together whether the Insights tab is something you want

    Where it has rolled out, a supervising parent can see topics a teen asked Meta AI about in the last 7 days. Meta's newsroom lists the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a wider rollout planned. It shows topics, not the chats. Some parents will want that. Some teens will feel watched. It is not a way to read their messages.

    1. Tell your teen what you would see: up to 10 topics from the last 7 days, not the prompts and not the replies.
    2. Family Center, the teen's dashboard, Their AI interactions, Topic insights.
    3. This covers Instagram, Messenger, and the Meta AI app and website. Meta says its AI will not engage with teens on suicide, eating disorders, or romantic or sexual topics.

  3. Remember that app time limits include AI

    Meta says parent-set app time limits, which can be as low as 15 minutes a day, include time spent with AI. There is not a separate AI timer confirmed here.

    1. If you already set a time limit through Instagram supervision, that limit counts AI time too.
